Shane Black could be the new black for Iron Man 3

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, February 9, 2011

Shane Black is considered by many who worked in Hollywood in the late 1980s and 1990s as a legend. His story is one that aspiring screenwriters think of before they fall into gentle slumber at night: young, hungry scribe sells his spec script to Warner Bros. for an astounding amount of money. That script gets turned into Lethal Weapon and becomes a mega-franchise for Warner Bros. Black goes on to write more screenplays, each selling for bigger amounts. Then, in the mid-90s, he vanishes. (Actually, he turns into a recluse, emerging every year like a groundhog to host an awesome Halloween party.)

But a few years ago we saw the return of Shane Black. He reemerged as the director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, that wry Robert Downey Jr./Val Kilmer buddy-cop comedy/action movie. Then he took some deals to write the screenplay for Doc Savage and Death Note. And now he could be the frontrunner to write and direct what would be his highest profile film to date: Iron Man 3.

The story is that Black is one of several people that Marvel Studios is talking to about making the threequel (Black is the only name mentioned.) By being such a well regarded writer of action movies that had memorable characters, already the blogosphere is gushing over the idea of a Shane Black vision of Iron Man 3. And he's already got the prior relationship with Downey established so the shorthand between the writer/director and the star will be there.

Marvel wants Iron Man 3 out in theaters on May 3, 2013. There's been some tarnish to the brand because of the falling out between Jon Favreau and Marvel, and the notes of discontent that Iron Man 2 didn't live up to the coolness factor of the first Iron Man. Marvel's proven to be geek savvy with its director choices for Thor (Kenneth Branagh) and Captain America (Joe Johnson) so it seems like a natural decision to give the tune-up job to Black for IM3. Let's see if the company can reach a deal with the legend.

yeah yeah whatever happened to Shane Black anyway? you're right he did turn into a recluse.

Renny Harlin is the same way.. he pops up every few years to make a new movie, i think after Adventures of Ford Fairlane he dissapeared for like 3 years and them resurfaced to do Long Kiss goodnight, dissapeared for another 3 years, came back and did Deep Blue Sea... theres a 3 year gap between Driven and Exorcist: the Beginning.

of course... i think Renny did some jail time in there too :)

with Shane Black, I think anybody would go into hiding after writing Last Action Hero. that movie was an embarrasment. LOL
