Russell Crowe has a reputation for having a hot head but this story is about his other head. Actually, it's about his personal beliefs about whether boys should keep their foreskin or not, and how once again Twitter can prove to be too much of a temptation for the better known of us.
It all began on June 9 when Crowe was asked a question by a Twitter follower: would he get his newly-born son circumsized? Crowe's answer (in less than 140 characters): "Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature? Is it real that GOD required a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect."
You could see what's coming next.
Crowe's observations launched a flurry of new tweets at him, ranging from the more moderate Twitter users attempting to explain their pro-circumcision beliefs to the angrier people that wanted to stomp on the Oscar-winning actor for expressing his opinion. There were even some that accused Crowe of being anti-semetic. "I love my Jewish friends, I love the apples and the honey and the funny little hats but stop cutting yr babies," the Gladiator said, adding even more fuel to the fire.
After a couple of days of riding stormy social media seas, Crowe decided to delete several of his tweets and concede defeat. "I have a deep and abiding love for all people of all nationalities, I'm very sorry that I have said things on here that have caused distress," said one of his latest tweets, followed by, "My personal beliefs aside I realize that some will interpret this debate as me mocking the rituals and traditions of others. I am very sorry."
Here's hoping that Russell's reputation doesn't lose any skin in the longterm.
