Peter Jackson confirms actors for The Hobbit movies

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, October 21, 2010

Director Peter Jackson has finally confirmed the names of several actors who have secured roles in the two Hobbit movies. While one of those actors has been well-known to be up for the major role of Bilbo Baggins, other casting decisions that seemed to be a certainty were not confirmed by Jackson -- at least, not right now.

The major role of Bilbo has indeed gone to Martin Freeman, the English actor best known for his role in Ricky Gervais' The Office series and as Arthur Dent in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. "Despite the various rumors and speculation surround this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us," Peter Jackson said of the casting. "There are a few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave -- exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit."

Richard Armitage will play the leader of the Company of Dwarves, Thorin Oakenshield. "Richard is one of the most exciting and dynamic actors working on screen today and we know he is going to make an amazing Thorin Oakenshield," commented Jackson. "We cannot wait to start this adventure with him and feel very lucky that one of the most beloved characters in Middle Earth is in such good hands."

Armitage has appeared in several British television series such as Spooks, The Vicar of Dibley and Robin Hood. He'll also be seen in the upcoming Marvel movie Captain America: The First Avenger playing the part of Heinz Kruger.

Several other actors were also mentioned by Jackson as having won the parts of the dwarves. Aidan Turner will play Kili; Rob Kazinsky will play Fili; Graham McTavish will play Dwalin; John Callen will play Oin; Stephen Hunter will play Bombur; Mark Hadlow will play Dori; and Peter Hambleton will play Gloin.

On the other casting choices, Jackson said, "Rob is an extremely talented young actor with a huge career in front of him. I'm thrilled that he has agreed to take on the role of Fili. Besides his talent as an actor, Rob is also a champion sword fighter and I'm looking forward to seeing the damage he can do to a horde of marauding Goblins... Aidan is a wonderfully gifted young actor who hails from Ireland. I'm sure he will bring enormous heart and humor to the role of Kili... Graham is a terrific actor, with a great depth of experience, which I know he will bring to the role of Dwalin... I have worked with Mark Hadlow on many projects, he is a fantastic actor...I am also proud to annoucne the casting of New Zealand actors as Peter Hambleton, John Callen and Stephen Hunter. Fran and I know that they will bring great depth and talent to our Company of Dwarves."

Missing from the casting announcement were the names of Ian McKellen (Gandalf the Grey), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn). The first two actors are all-but expected to reprise their roles from The Lord of the Rings for the two Hobbit films, and their lack of inclusion suggests that the deals for Serkis and McKellen are not yet complete. As for Mortensen, his character's inclusion in The Hobbit has been bandied about as a possibility but never as a for-certain inevitability. There's also been rumors that Bill Nighy (Davy Jones from the last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies) and David Tennant could be up for the other roles, such as the voice of the dragon Smaug and the Elf Lord.

Not addressed in the announcement was a mention of whether New Line/Warner Bros. pulling The Hobbit production from New Zealand to England.

I hope they rewrite the Smaug scene so that it's Legolas that shoots Smaug down, and then Gimli shows up to bellow "THAT ONLY COUNTS AS ONE!!!!"
