New Batman: Arkham City showcases villainy of Hugo Strange
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, December 11, 2010

During tonight's broadcast of the Video Game Awards (VGA) on Spike TV a whole load of new and exciting announcements and previews were beheld. Major new releases like Mass Effect 3 and a new Elder Scrolls game were announced, but during the broadcast a second trailer for the forthcoming Batman: Arkham City game was aired. Did this trailer just tell us that the main villain behind the antics in the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum is Dr. Hugo Strange? And is it just a big coincidence that Strange is the current frontrunner for who might be the main bad guy in the next Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises?
Coincidence, or cross-medium synergy at work? After all, Warner Bros. has promised to have more communication and corporate creativity going on between its movie division and the video game division. Arkham City is being developed by Rocksteady Games, and they were bought up by Warner Bros. Interactive Games. So, do the boys working at Rocksteady know more than what the gen pop does? Is WB setting the stage for the introduction of Hugo Strange to the mainstream populace that only knows of The Joker, Penguin and Catwoman in Batman's rogues gallery of enemies? Perhaps.
But what I do know is this: this latest Arkham City preview could literally be a teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises. See for yourself and you tell me if it doesn't have the real world feel of something from the Nolanverse of Batman:

That, or it could be that all the stuff we thought we were hearing about The Dark Night Rises was stuff we were hearing about Arkham City--sort of like that time we all thought major steps were being taken on a new Ghostbusters movie, and it turned out to be a game.
