Narnia 3 leads off Friday's box office
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, December 11, 2010
The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader assumed a commanding start on the weekend's box office derby by taking in an estimated $8.1 million dollars on its opening day. Playing on 3,555 screens, that gives Narnia 3 about an average of $2,500 in ticket sales per screen -- not a lot of demand for a big holiday picture on its opening weekend. Based on the forecast ahead, Dawn Treader isn't likely to break $30 million on its opening weekend but it will still wind up in first place.
The Tourist had a decent Friday with $6.1 million in ticket sales, but it isn't going to be a mega-hit in the careers of Johnny Depp or Angelina Jolie. Tangled tumbled to third place with $3.3m; Harry Potter 7 had $2.4m in ticket sales last night; and Unstoppable is starting to come to a stop with $1.2m from its Friday night screenings.
Opening on just four screens in New York and Los Angeles, The Fighter had a commanding start to what many believe will be a film that gets multiple award nominations. The Mark Wahlberg/Christian Bale drama took in $98,000 from its showings yesterday at those four venues. Do the math and that's a little less than $25k in ticket sales at each location. The movie will open to a wider release schedule next week.

That's a terrible Friday gross. I was afraid this might happen when there was nobody in the theater, but I hoped it was because I went to a 2D showing.
If it doesn't crack thirty million, the chances of it reaching 100 million by the end of its run are pretty slim.
