Movie rights to Dead Island sold to Lionsgate
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Dead Island had been one of this fall's most anticipated video game releases. An incendiary trailer commanded a lot of attention from the online press, but when the game was released earlier this month, the critics weren't so happy. Poor zombie AI, weird gameplay mechanics and boring moments deflated the buzz balloon for Dead Island as a game -- but not so much for a possible movie.
Lionsgate has acquired the movie rights for Dead Island, and it sounds like they were impressed by the trailer more than the game's reviews. "Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck, said Joe Drake, the co-COO of Lionsgate. "This is exactly the type of property we're looking to adapt at Lionsgate - it's sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential."
I wouldn't go so far as to say Dead Island has worldwide brand recognition, but I would say that the zombie monster craze is still happening, so Lionsgate smells an opportunity when one comes their way.
No one's been hired to direct, write the Dead Island movie yet, but it does have a pair of producers, namely Stefan Sonnenfeld and Sean Daniel.
Here's that trailer that got people talking about the game:

Jakester's the local Dead Island expert around these parts, so he's the obvious choice for on point story coverage. If there's zombie penises involved, all the more apropos.
