Meet the new Doctor Who

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, January 3, 2009

26-year-old Matt Smith has been selected to become the eleventh incarnation -- and the youngest yet -- of the BBC's Time Lord in the fifth series of Doctor Who. Smith will take over control of the TARDIS from 37-year-old David Tennant who has played the character for three seasons and four upcoming one-hour specials to be broadcast throughout 2009.

"I'm just so excited about the journey that is in front of me. It's a wonderful privilege and challenge that I hope I will thrive on," Smith said during the announcement, made during today's broadcast of Doctor Who Confidential. "I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling.

"David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him. The challenge for me is to do justice to the show's illustrious past, my predecessors and most importantly to those who watch it. I really cannot wait."

Steven Moffat, slated to become the show's new showrunner and head writer when Russell T Davies steps down at the end of Tennant's run, had nothing but good things to say about the casting of Smith: "The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man. 2010 is a long time away but rest assured the Eleventh Doctor is coming - and the universe has never been so safe."

After being originally cancelled in 1989, the new Doctor Who is now ranked as one of Britain's top-rated shows. In 2004 Davies dusted off the sci-fi property by crafting one-hour long, self-contained stories and updating the show's creature and special effects while also remaining faithful to the show's previous 26 years worth of history. Christopher Eccleston played the Tenth Doctor in the first season and then had his character regenerate into David Tennant. Since the Doctor is a human-looking alien, when he regenerates he can change his appearance, thus allowing for new actors to play the same character over decades.

judgeing soley by the haircut, I'd say he was (and perhaps still is) a punk rocker... not a bad thing though...I'll miss Tennant a lot and hope that Matt Smith can fill those huge shoes... still when are we gonna be treated to an episode with Multiple Doctors?

I've been catching up with Dr. Who (currently near the end of 2nd season), so I'm still enjoying David Tennant as the Doctor. I also really liked Christopher Eccleston, so I fully expect to like this Matt Smith guy as well.

Kid looks like he's turning to the camera to start singing..."Taaaake on meeeeee"

Seriously though, I lost track shortly after Eccelston's departure. I just couldn't keep up. I'm not surprised its a mega hit in the UK, but frankly, I don't even see promos for it on Sci Fi here in my area.

Kaeos are you saying he looks like A-ha? LOL!
I was thinking David Bowie from 1990 but I actually did a search on A Flock of Seagulls and YES they actually sported that very same "combed to a point" hairdo that Matt Smith is sporting in this very picture. hopefully he'll have a cute assistant that will force him to comb his Flock of Seagulls hair into something more managable.

God only knows we DONT want the 80's hairstyles to come back!!!!!
