Marvel's Avengers assemble for their movie poster

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Today Marvel released its North America one-sheet for the upcoming summer superhero spectacular The Avengers. While this piece of marketing collateral is targeted for North American audiences, for watchers in the United Kingdom they'll see a slightly different version when the quad poster appears in cinemas over there as well as a title change.

In England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland The Avengers will instead be titled Marvel Avengers Assemble. Why? Because of the iconic status of two other better-known avengers, Mr. Steed and Mrs. Peel, better known as television's The Avengers.

The two secret agents were played by Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg in the popular British series that has the same title as Marvel's latest movie. In the U.K., ask "Who are The Avengers?" to the average person down at the fish and chips shoppe and you'll likely be told it's a fellow wearing a bowler hat and a bird in a skintight leather outfit.

In any case, the cast in this new Avengers movie hasn't changed: it's still Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Joss Whedon (Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) directed.

I'm not ready to believe this is real. It has some real perspective and lighting issues. It also features known poses and promotional images that suggest the poster maker did the best he could (still not very good) with what he had.

I feel like Disney (John Carter promo artwork aside) and Marvel are more capable artists than this.
