Ever since the logline of NBC's Day One was announced everyone had assumed that the sci-fi component of the series would be minimal. However, after viewing a leaked trailer for the show's pilot episode we're now learning that won't be the case.
When it was first announced earlier in the year, Day One was described as centering on a group of survivors caught up in the aftermath of a global cataclysm. The show would follow the day-to-day existence of them as society attempted to rebuild itself after the planetary calamity strikes. Based on that description of the show it sounded like the major disaster that sets up the show's premise was a natural one, like a supervolcano going off, asteroid impact or the planet's axis moving. A website called Quiet Earth got its hands on rough footage of a Day One trailer and put it up on their site only to have it pulled shortly afterward. However, the video has spread virally and appeared on other sites such as You Tube:
Quiet Earth also published a modified synopsis of the show's premise which confirms that the disaster came from space:
"Day One chronicles a global catastrophe from the perspective of the residents of a southern California apartment complex. In the wake of a mysterious event that has shattered lines of communication and (literally) changed the shape of the world, the survivors must work together to both rebuild and save the Earth from a menace that might have already consumed countless other worlds..."
What do you think of the Day One trailer? Lost meets Melrose Place meets War of the Worlds meets Half-Life 2? Already some people in the Quiet Earth comments section are comparing what they saw in Day One to the premise of a 1965 science fiction novel called The Genocides.
Day One is currently slated for broadcast on NBC sometime in 2010. 13 episodes have been ordered by the network.
ok I dont see any comparison to LOST and only nominally War of the Worlds... i've never watched a single episode of Melrose Place so I cant make that connection... but half-Life 2? isnt that about zombies?
i was kinda surprised, after all those comparisons, that you didnt say "WOW... its a new spin on V" and leave it at that... sure, theres no lizards here, but neighbors/Visitors its really all the same... right?
