January Jones talks Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, January 4, 2011

When the character of The White Queen, a.k.a. Emma Frost, was first introduced in the early 1980s issues of The Uncanny X-Men comic book, she was a straight out villain...a villainness that just happens to have a costume that looks like fetish sex gear. Through those first years, The White Queen became a foible to the X-Men, and later their teenage counterparts The New Mutants, but as a character Emma Frost didn't evolve much further than to be a thorn in the side of Charles Xavier and his team.

In the 2000s that finally changed when writer Grant Morrison got a hold of the comic book. at the recommendation of a fan, Morrison decided to give Emma more complexity and make her more of a good guy. She joined the X-Men, gained a secondary mutation (the ability to turn her body into an impervious diamond-like form) and began a romantic affair with the team's leader, Cyclops. We also learned more about who Emma Frost was as a person: under that sneer, upper-class veneer Emma harbored a vulnerbility and a desire to be seen as a force of change for the mutant community. She still wore the revealing costumes and taunted her teammates just as much as when she was on the other side of the fence but now we had more to go on about why she acted in this way.

So how much of that complexity will we see January Jones show us in X-Men: First Class when it comes out in theaters this summer? Maybe, surprisingly, the answer is quite a bit. In a new interview with the Hero Complex blog, the blonde Mad Men actress waxes enthusiastically about the complexity of her character (as well as those naughty fetish costumes).

"Fans of the X-Men comics have a very set idea of these characters in their heads," Jones said. "I wanted to know as much as I could about her so I wasn’t disappointing anyone. I’m sure I will still disappoint someone."

Jones also goes on to describe her character's costumes as "insane", which sounds about right. "It's a lot of very body-conscious stuff. If you look at the comic book, she’s barely dressed. She's got quite the bod, which is very intimidating."

We also have confirmation that Frost will have her secondary mutation in the movie. Even though First Class is set in the 1960s and introduces Emma to the X-Men movie franchise, and her character didn't have the diamond form ability until recently, she'll be able to use mental powers as well as change her body form. "When I morph into my diamond form, it's all done on computer," Jones explained.

So now that we've confirmed that Emma Frost will be wearing her sexy garments and turning into diamond, all that's left to find out is whether Jones will be displaying Emma's in-your-face attitude in the movie. On that the jury is still out.
