A Brit Talkbacker on AICN made the fair point that they had to endure Kevin Costner as Robin Hood.

27-year-old Englishman Henry Cavill has been picked to be the next actor playing Superman up on the big screen.
Deadline is breaking the news this morning. The site states that Cavill has beaten out all other contenders to win the part in Zack Snyder's new relaunch of the Superman film franchise. Quoting an unnamed Warner Bros. source, Deadline's mole states, "He's got an amazing quality. He doesn't look too much like Reeve and Routh but he's big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him... We're really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible."
Cavill was once a contender for playing Superman when Bryan Singer was forming his version of the all-American superhero for Superman Returns. The part was eventually won by Brandon Routh. With Warner Bros. seeking to distance themselves from the tepid results of Singer's Superman movie, Routh's involvement in Snyder's Superman movie would have likely been seen as acceptance that the events in Superman Returns happened. Snyder's new Superman movie, which is using a story constructed by Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan and screenwriter David Goyer, is moving the franchise forward by dismissing everything that took place in Superman Returns
Cavill may be best known for playing Charles Brandon throughout the series run of The Tudors. He's also had roles in Stardust, Town Creek and Tristan + Isolde. He's playing Theseus in the upcoming Greek heroes and demigods movie Immortals by directior Tarsem Singh.
UPDATE: Director Zack Snyder has officially commented on the casting news: "In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and 'S' shield."
Yeah, but America just happens to be the premiere maker of big budget movies, so you'd expect our actors to show up more. I won't complain about British Batmans and Supermans on low budget BBC and Channel 4 productions. In fact, it would be awesome.
I think a big part of the problem is that most of the chiseled-looking, young American male actors got their start as models.
At the risk of sounding like I am bigging up my fellow country men at the expense of American actors, that is not the intention......
Some big Hollywood director (and I cannot for the life of me remember who, so off to Google I go shortly) mentioned that a lot of directors find working with Brits easier. They alluded to this being due to a large number of them that come with classical training and a history of stage acting from a very young age so they respond to, and work with, direction better than a lot of their American peers. He also mentioned that they come without a lot of baggage such as a sense of entitlement, a demanding entourage and agents who know the price of everything and the value of nothing. I remember thinking at the time that this Director was probably not going to be making alot of friends in Hollywood!
So far...so good.

Quit casting Brits as our American superheroes, Nolan and Nolan-related projects! You can't put a feather in his cap and call it macaroni! Putting feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken!
