Universal's Fast Five has been in theaters for just one day but it's already achieved a record for the biggest one-day gross in 2011. The fifth movie in the Fast and the Furious franchise (OK, now I've running out of 'f's to use for the rest of this paragraph), FF5 took in an estimated -- wait for it -- $33.3 million dollars. Again, this is just for its opening day (and it includes the bucks made from midnight showings.)
This is a gigantic feat for Universal to crow about since 2011 has been (so far) a relatively slow one for box office. Fast Five is on track to hit a three-day tally somewhere between $70-$80 million dollars, which would eclipse 2009's Fast and Furious' $71m opening weekend.
20th Century Fox's CG toon Rio was next in the Friday standings with $3.6m in ticket sales followed by Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family with $3.1m.

Huh. Thursty went higher than most for his Fast Five prediction, and looks like he'll still be lower than the actual gross.
$33.3 million will put it close to $100 million for the weekend.
