Dragon training defeats Alice in Wonderland

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, March 28, 2010

It's turned out to be an interesting weekend if you follow the flow of the box office. DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's How to Train Your Dragon debuted in number one spot with a commanding gross of $43.3 million dollars. But here's the thing: the CG fantasy picture is playing on a number of 3D and IMAX screens which accounted for 68% of the movie's opening figure. The 3D/IMAX venues charge more for each ticket and that factors into the higher gross of the picture. Even with that extra boost in revenue, How to Train Your Dragon couldn't soar as high as the opening of Monsters vs. Aliens which netted $59.3m last spring.

Still, Dragon's money haul was enough to dethrone the champ for the past three weeks, Alice in Wonderland. After a month the Disney picture (another 3Der) has earned $293 million domestic making it the second-highest grossing movie this year after Avatar. Combined the top two films netted $60 million dollars -- and just further cemented Hollywood's impetus to make more 3D movies.

Hot Tub Time Machine opened with a modest, if a bit underwhelming, $13.6m. The second week for The Bounty Hunter was pleasant, with the film's $12.4m gross only 40% less than last week's, bringing that picture's total domestic take to $38.8m. Diary of a Wimpy Kid dropped three spots to #5 ($10m new, $35.7m total.) Remaining in sixth place is She's Out of My League ($3.5m new, $25.6m total), making it the first time that Jay Baruchel has had two films in the top ten (with the other pic being Dragon.)

Green Zone goes down from #5 to #7 ($3.3m new, $30.4m total) and is headed for reconnaisance in Disappointment Land. Shutter Island is still doing alright six weeks in ($3.1m new, $120.6m total) but Universal's Repo Men is being repossessed by the bank ($3.0m new, $11.3m total.) Finally, in tenth place is Our Family Wedding ($2.2m new, $16.7m total.)

And one addendum to mention: after 14 weeks of being in the top ten Avatar is finally out of there. The world's highest-grossing movie of all-time is in eleventh place this week with $2.0m new in ticket sales, bringing Avatar's cume up to $740.4m domestic and 1.94 billion dollars from foreign regions. Avatar's worldwide gross now stands at $2.684 billion dollars.
