- The Hollywood Reporter says that planning for a live-action Doctor Who movie is finally happening. (LIVE ACTION? um... thats odd, was there ever anything other than a live action Dr. Who...ever?)
- The Doctor Who movie would also not be connected to the Doctor Who television series, which almost certainly means that none of the actors who have played the character on the TV show, like David Tennant, Matt Smith or Christopher Eccelston. (uh... bummer they've made that decision this early on, as each of these Dr. Who actors already has a built in fan base willing to support this endevor, while many of us still cringe at the memories of the ill fated FOX Dr. Who flop...just pull a "Cowboy BeBop and have it fit into continuity inside the TV series, and pick a previous actor from the show to play the Doctor...why is this taking so long to produce? OH yes, to "get it just right"...uh... they've HAD six seasons to "get it right" and guess what? they GOT IT RIGHT... why reboot this franchise AT ALL? They got it, it's working perfectly, why screw it up?)

After many reports that turned out to be false starts, The Hollywood Reporter says that planning for a live-action Doctor Who movie is finally happening. Harry Potter director David Yates (who directed the final four films in that franchise) is developing the Who movie.
The Reporter states that the BBC is now looking for a writer to begin work on the Doctor Who screenplay. What isn't addressed by the Reporter's Borys Kit is whether any of the key personnel involved with the very successful TV reboot of Doctor Who (which launched in 2004) would be involved in the feature film. If not, then why not?
As these are the very early days of work, there isn't any star power attached to the project yet. The Doctor Who movie would also not be connected to the Doctor Who television series, which almost certainly means that none of the actors who have played the character on the TV show, like David Tennant, Matt Smith or Christopher Eccelston, would be in the running to play the alien Time Lord in the film.
Doctor Who has proven to be a true money maker for the BBC in these hard financial times. Along with the success of the television series commanding high ratings, there have been two spin-off series (The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood.) Additionally, a wide range of Doctor Who merchandise, toys, collectibles and clothing provide a source of ancillary revenue for the cash-strapped British network.
There were two animated Doctor Who specials on CBBC over the last few years. Both featured Tennant as the 10th Doctor.
There were also animated episodes with Richard E Grant at some point, weren't there?
Even as a new fan, I think this is a bad idea. Part of what I like about Who is the history, take that away and all you have is an alien who travels through time.
I JUST watched the first three episodes of season 1 on netflix last night and it's kept me interested. Im staying with it and like the humor. Oh and I just saw two people in a lipstick commercial rolling on the road....
