Disney's next Princess movie moves up

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, March 10, 2009

The next traditional animated feature from Walt Disney Pictures will now arrive in theaters two weeks earlier. Originally Disney had intended for The Princess and the Frog to come out on Christmas Day this year but now the studio has bumped up the film. The picture will now open in wide release on December 11, 2009.

Disney will also try and create advance buzz for the flick by opening it in Los Angeles and New York City on November 25. Since this is the first new Disney princess since Mulan was released in 1998, and the first of the company's new era of traditionally animated films, much attention is being given to the presentation of The Princess and the Frog by Disney suits. The new princess being introduced in the film is Princess Tiana, also the company's first princess from African-American heritage. Set in New Orleans and featuring music by Randy Newman, the voices for some of the characters are being provided by Oprah Winfrey, John Goodman, Terrence Howard and Keith David. Anika Noni Rose is providing the voice for Princess Tiana.

Personally. I can't wait to see how Disney does with their first traditional animation in a long time. Hopefully moving it up by a couple weeks is a good sign.

How did Randy Newman get famous? He sucks. I don't care how many scores he's done or songs he's written. He sucks.

I like him.

Why does he suck? Am I about to get Family Guy's generally uninformed "he sings observational lyrics about whatever stuff's about to the same melody" (itself a borrowed joke from a lame Tracy Chapman skit on In Living Color) argument?

Or do you just think his voice grates?

Since I like him, I'm curious to know why everyone who professes not to doesn't. Some of his arrangements are pretty complex, and some of his lyrics are heartbreaking, smile-inducing, brazenly unapologetic, et cetera. Van Dyke Parks covered him. He's one of the few non-Calypso acts Van Dyke Parks has covered, in fact (that's kind of a feat). Harry Nilsson liked his music so much, he made his entire fourth album (excluding his Skidoo! score) a Newman cover album (with Newman at the keys, no less).

Also, some of the things he has gotten away with saying--either by virtue of persona, obvious satire, or because it was acknowledged that he had already gotten away with saying all the other stuff with which he had gotten away--is pretty staggering. He's used the dreaded "N" word about as many times as any non-Rapper would dare.

I don't have a problem with Newman per se, but I think he's kind of like AC/DC - all of his songs sound the same and you could nearly interchange them. It just gets a little tired, I guess.

Is Disney actually doing this film themselves, does anyone know? At the time "Enchanted" came out, there was a big deal made that the "Disney traditional animation" portions were actually farmed out because Disney had gotten rid of their hand animation depts. Did they start it back up, or was this one hired out?

His marketable,nineties-and-beyond Disney music sounds samey (so I can understand a person hesitant to see him attached to yet another Disney movie), but he's pretty versatile.

His Ragtime score is beautiful. Songs as diverse in range as "Christmas in Cape Town," "Vine Street," "Mama Told Me Not to Come," "Living Without You," "Love Story," "Cowboy," "Baltimore," and "My Life Is Good," are good indicators of the broadness of the sonic tapestry he weaves, and often contain some pretty surprising moments, musically. His vocal range is limited (one of the reasons Nilsson Sings Newman is a treat; pre-Pussy Cats Nilsson [he smoked and drank through laryngitis, and shredded his vocal chords during the recording sessions, for fear Lennon might walk off if there was any lag] didn't have), but no more so than, say, Dylan's. (Of course, when it comes to versatility, Dylan has him beat as handily as Dylan has pretty much the rest of his contemporaries beat--at least in terms of seeming to be comfortable in whatever genre he's tinkering with.)

The guy has been with major labels since the late sixties, and he's been scoring almost that long. There's a lot more music there than some folks realize.

It was done in-house. Lasseter kicked Disney in its ass when he was given the reins and insisted on the reinstatement of the hand-drawn division.

What's Disney Studios without traditional animators, after all?

Also, in this case, I think Randy Newman is particularly suited to the job. He has spent much of his life in New Orleans.
