Disney reveals Planes star, release date

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, August 20, 2011

Disney revealed more details today at their D23 convention in Anaheim about Planes, the direct-to-DVD spinoff set in the world of Cars. The studio will release the feature length CG film on DVD in the spring of 2013.

Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men) will provide the voice for Planes' main character, a crop-duster named Dusty. Living in the small town of Propwash Junction, Dusty has dreams to fly alongside his heroes in the Wings Around the Globe rally. Dusty gets the support to believe in himself from Skipper, another plane, and his friends that he works with, and musters the courage and initiative to try and push himself further than he's ever gone before.

Planes is being developed by DisneyToon Studios, a new arm of the company. John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios, is overseeing the project while Emmy-nominated director Klay Hall is directing Planes.

"We are incredibly excited to have Jon Cryer on board as the voice of Dusty,” said Lasseter. "Jon brings so much comedy and believability to this character who dreams of soaring alongside his heroes in the 'Wings Around the Globe' Rally. Planes is a wonderful story that takes audiences on a great ride and Jon brings so much heart to the film."

The first trailer for Planes can be watched here.
