Director Matthew Vaughn returning for X-Men: First Class sequel
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, January 30, 2012
When Fox found a winning formula for X-Men: First Class they worked hard on locking the same ingredients down for a sequel. The talk was that Matthew Vaughn was being wooed to come back for round two with the 60s mutants, and that three-picture locks had already been negotiated for the cast members as a standard part of their First Class contracts.
Fox then made the move to hire Simon Kinberg (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) to start work on the First Class screenplay. Now we've learned via Deadline that Vaughn's contract is done and he will be directing the presently untitled X-Men: First Class sequel. Also returning to the creative fold is Bryan Singer as one of the movie's producers.
It's very early days for this project so we're likely looking at a two year wait until the movie is ready to be delivered to theaters. If I were to speculate about the storyline, my guess would be pushing ahead the setting to the end of the 1960s would be a nice place to open with. There's so many tumultuous events from that era like the Vietnam War, the rise of the hippie counterculture, Woodstock and the growing dissolution against trusting the government to do the right thing, that the story really could go anywhere.
And who could be the sequel's villain (besides the Magneto/Xavier feud that's just beginning)? I think introducing someone like Mister Sinister into the mix would be fun to see, especially since that character ties heavily into genetic manipulation. I'm also pretty sure that we'll get to see new X-Men join the team as well, perhaps even a young Cyclops and Jean Grey.
Any other recommendations for new mutants that you'd like to see in the X-Men movie universe?
