While it's still up in the air as to who will play Superman's adoptive father and the Man of Steel's adversary in Zack Snyder's new Superman movie, we now have our second confirmed addition to the project: Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the mother to Clark/Kal-El.

Lane has been in films since her 1984 debut in Streets of Fire. She was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in 2002's Unfaithful, and her most recent movie was the Disney horse racing flick Secretariat. as with the speculative casting news pegging Kevin Costner as the frontrunner to play Martha's husband Jonathan, Snyder's Superman movie is giving a more youthful, and era relevant look to Superman's mother and father.

In a press release announcing the casting news, Snyder said, "This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman.  We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination."

British-born actor Henry Cavill has been selected to play Superman/Clark in the new movie, set for release in December 2012.
