Cloverfield sequel still happening, just slowly
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, March 22, 2011
The director of Cloverfield said that there's still life in the notion of making a sequel to his 2008 found footage monster movie, proving that the hardest thing to kill about these beasties is the sequel.
Talk immediately began about Cloverfield 2 right after the release of picture numero uno, and with producer J.J. Abrams safely nestled in with Paramount Pictures, it makes sense that the studio would like to see another installment happen. Eventually. And not even director Matt Reeves knows when Cloverfield 2 will happen. "Well, you are going to see it - we just don't know when," Reeves told Total Film in an exclusive interview.
Reeves, Abrams and screenwriter Drew Goddard are the primary people that figure into when Cloverfield 2 will happen, and all three are busy earning paychecks from other jobs. Reeves explains that the trio are "talking about the story quite a lot," but, "the three of us have been so busy that getting the right idea together has been taking a long time."
They are also unsure as to what format the sequel should be filmed in. Should it be done in the same narrative style as traditional movies or should Cloverfield 2 return to the found footage format employed in the first movie? "How can you continue that idea successfully for a second time?" the director rhetorically asked the reporter.
"We have a lot of affection for the original and the sequel can't just be the same thing. But that is tricky when you need to have a monster destroying stuff once again."
Another project that could have the potential of impacting Cloverfield 2 is another big monster movie, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.

kind of a cool idea would be to start the movie as a film narrative and then move into regular movie or switch back and forth like Diary of the Dead.
