Carey Mulligan cast in new Great Gatsby flick
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, November 16, 2010
Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann is putting together a new version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and has found his Daisy Buchanan in the person of 25-year-old British actress Carey Mulligan, presently one of Hollywood's new it girls.
Mulligan is the first to be cast in Baz's Gatsby. Circling the part of Gatzby is Leo DiCaprio and Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire is up for the part of Gatz's best friend, Nick. Several other major parts are also up for grabs.
Luhrmann broke the news to Deadline, Nikki Finke's imfamous Hollywood news blog, and also shared a photograph he took of Mulligan done up in the role for an audition earlier in the month. "Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world's most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting," the filmmaker told the site. "However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: 'Hello, Daisy Buchanan.'"
The last adaptation done of Fitzgerald's seminal work was a 2000 television movie that starred Mira Sorvino as Daisy, Paul Rudd as Nick and Toby Stephens as Gatsby.
