Is Batman's Christopher Nolan godfathering a new Superman movie?

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Could the director of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight now be creatively shepherding a new reboot of Warner Bros.' Superman film franchise? That is precisely what Nikki Finke and Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood are reporting this morning. The news will certainly cause shockwaves of interest from the geekosphere and only fuel the speculation as to what Nolan's involvement will be in the third Batman movie.

DH's source reports that it's still very early in the design of what WB is refering to in-house as Superman 3.0. Remember that only four years ago we saw Bryan Singer (X-Men) hand the world his concept of a Superman movie, Superman Returns. That movie, which was heavily influenced by the first two Superman movies of the late 1970s and early 1980s, starred Brandon Routh as the new Man of Steel. Even though the film made $391 million worldwide it's considered a failure by most people for not rejuvinating the cinematic brand the way that Batman Begins did for the Dark Knight.

The mole states that Nolan won't direct the new Superman movie; instead, his involvement is in a creative godfather kind of way, guiding the project through its development. Nolan is still in post-production on Inception, due out in theaters in July, and reportedly his brother Jonah and David Goyer are now writing the script for the third Batman movie (at least that's what DH is claiming all because Goyer is no longer showrunning ABC's FlashForward.)

And according to the tipster, the business side of this new Superman movie is still being worked out. They say that neither Bryan Singer nor Brandon Routh are "completely out of [the Superman franchise] yet,", and that longtime Superman producer Jon Peters "is trying to make something happen since he stands to benefit financially. But they [the studio] need to hear a great story that makes sense." So really, all that's supposedly happened is that Nolan is going to act in a creative producer capacity for Superman 3.0.

More to come as this story develops...

Hmmmmmmm. Not so sure.

1) I am selfish and don't want this to negatively impact the current Bats franchise.
2) I think Supes needs a totally different creative outlook to the Bat. Not saying Nolan only has one approach/vision/pallette but I think that the themes he traditionally works within are not necessarily compatible with Supes.

i dunno, I wouldn't wish the superman franchise on anybody.... it seems like its the kiss of death for actors and directors alike... aside from Dean Cain who seems to be doing well these days, tragedy usually befalls actors after they stop playing the role of Superman so for now Tom Welling is safe.

i think that Christopher Nolan has nothing to lose by being the exec Producer, but being the next director is like playing high-stakes poker and not knowing if you should fold or not.

I really thought Superman Returns hurt Bryan Singer's directing career but apparently not, (except nobody seeing Valkyrie) he's got a few titles coming out in 2011 (including Battlestar Galactica) but its like the guy went into hiding for a few years and kept a low profile after Superman Returns came out on DVD.

just make Batman vs Superman and it'll be an instant hit...hopefully
