Avatar sinks Titanic as worldwide box office champ
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, January 26, 2010

If the box office estimates hold up -- and it's all but official at this time -- James Cameron's Avatar surpassed Titanic and became the highest-grossing movie of all-time internationally sometime yesterday.
Avatar is expected to have earned around $15 million dollars from the international markets on Monday. With a cumulative total of $1.838 billion dollars grossed as of this past Sunday, Monday's $15 million will have brought the total for Avatar to around $1.853 billion, which would be $10 million dollars more than Titanic's final international gross of $1.842 billion dollars. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new king of the world -- and it was made by the last champion's king of the world.
Domestically Avatar is less than $50 million dollars away from beating Titanic's $600.8 million dollar gross. If Avatar doesn't beat Titanic this coming weekend then the record will fall next Monday or a week from today.
James Cameron, his accountant and the accountants working for 20th Century Fox would like to thank you.

I have to personally stand corrected then.
Whilst I didn't think it would ever be a flop, I did think that Titanic would have had more cross market appeal and that the waves of women who re-watched that movie over and over and over to propel it to the top of the earnings list would not find Avatar as appealing. I thought Avatar would miss out on the repeat business from this important demographic. I was wrong.
That said, not only does 3-D help thwart the 'in-theater' pirates, and put a few extra dollars on each ticket price, until home 3D makes it into reality it also makes even the most committed home entertainment fan get off their couch and get into the theater. This must have boosted the revenues. As would people deciding to see it '....just one more time...' to take advantage of the 3D-ness as they will never get to experience it like that at home any time soon.
Well played JC and all involved.
