Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the new number one film at the box office. With an opening weekend gross of $54 million dollars, this Planet of the Apes prequel/reboot exceeded studio expectations -- and this weekend's gross will likely be enough for 20th Century Fox to ask for a sequel.
I've read that this new Apes' budget was modest -- around $100 million dollars, even with all of that motion capture CG performance rendering done by Weta Studios. A $54m opening means that Rise will likely finish its domestic run at around $140m - $150m. Factor in international box office and eventual home video revenue and this is going to be a profitable venture for Fox. Director Rupert Wyatt wants sequels, so my guess is that sometime this week he's going to receive a couple of phone calls telling him to start jotting down his ideas for future Apes follow-up films.
The Smurfs remained in second place this weekend, adding $21m more dollars to its $76m total. Cowboys & Aliens sank to third from first while newcomer comedy The Change-Up could only debut in fourth place.
Here are this weekend's top 10 movies ranked by their grosses:

I think a lot of the Apes resentment and eventual rebellion and Apes rise to overthrow mankind could have simpley been averted had James Franco's character been honest with Caesar that first time at Muir woods when Caesar did not want to get back in the car... Franoc's character apologetically says to Caesar "no, you are not a pet" which makes Caesar happy knowning that the next time franco wants to throw a leash around his neck, he will be armed with a MAJOR weapon of new-found self confidence... BIG MISTAKE... PIVOTAL mistake on franco's part.... Caesar actually IS the pet to James Franco and John Lithgow and he has to accept that fact in today's society, else he wont understand why he's on a leash and grown up to be so goddamn misunderstood and hated by the human society...
very simple he should have said, "Caesar, you are a pet... fucking deal with it." and move on, instead Franco offers zero backbone and the ape rises up to overthrow mankind... still a good movie... just learn that you gotta make the pet understand who's the boss/master and who's the pet/slave or there wil lbe hell to pay later on.
