American Gladiators have their eyes on the movies

It sounds crazy but there are now people working on turning the syndicated extreme sports game show American Gladiators into a movie.

Producer Scott Mednick (300, Superman Returns) has teamed up with show creator Johnny Ferraro to develop the film, envisioned as a story that takes place in the American Gladiators world but with new characters. Considering that the program has been on television for 19 of the past 20 years and has been adapted to over a dozen countries it's a wonder that it took this long for someone to hatch the idea of an American Gladiators movie.

The show's premise has two men and two women competing against an army of hulking "gladiators" with names like Hurricane, Rocket, Militia and Venom. The object for the contestants is to maneouver around the Gladiators in a series of sporting events that test the players' endurance, marksmanship and strength.

Sunset Pictures is funding the development of the property with Catch Me If You Can producer Martin Guigui getting an executive producer credit.
