30 years late, here comes the Space Invaders movie
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Warner Bros. is in negotiations to buy the movie rights to Space Invaders, the classic coin-op game, from Japanese company Taito.
When it was released back in 1978, Space Invaders became one of the biggest hits ever released into arcades. There wasn't much backstory to the game, just action: you controlled a mobile gun that shot at strange looking space creatures that slowly descended from the skies. When you cleared a screen of the invaders another army would appear, these ones faster than the ones that came before.
Credit the Los Angeles Times' entertainment column for breaking the story and revealing that WB wants producers Mark Gordon (The Day After Tomorrow), Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and Guymon Casady to help them make the film. There's no screenwriter or a story concept attached to the project just yet.
Classic arcade games seem to be making a return to the public's consciousness. Universal Pictures has a movie in developed based on Atari's legendary Asteroids game and 20th Century Fox is reported to be holding onto the screen rights to Missile Command.
O give me a home
Where the asteroids roam
And the pleebes and the fuzzywugs play
Where gravity's low
And the water is snow
And the desert winds blow you a-way!
Mars, Mars is my home
Where everyone's short just like me
I wish I was where
There is not so much air
And two moons to smile down upon me
(I did that from memory, so apologies if it's not correct)
There is nothing to add that hasn't already been covered by the episode of Futurama that involved this.
