Finally, a break in the draught of no news about this Terry Gilliam project: Christoph Waltz is the new lead cast in Zero Theorem. Also, the plan is for the film to start shooting on October 22 in Europe. Pre-production is underway right now in Romania.
Waltz shot into the attention of the mainstream by playing the sadisic Nazi SS commander in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds. He's currently filming Tarantino's next, Django Unchained.

Slashfilm's Brendon Connelly has written a review for Pat Rushin's and gives it high marks. "I’ll call it a science-fiction drama that skidded on the turnpike and ended up ditched in a psychogenic fugue," writes Connelly about the feeling of the story before going on to claim that, after a result of reading the screenplay for Zero Theorem, this project is "now, without a doubt, my most anticipated film of 2010."
We learn details such as the name of the character that Thornton will play, Qohen Leth, and the supporting players that surround him. Connelly goes on to elaborate some of the science fiction concepts found in the screenplay without blowing any of the story's twists except to call them "astronomical" even for a filmmaker like Gilliam who has dabbled with ideas like God behind the creation of the universe (Time Bandits).
"From the very first page of the screenplay, the suitability of Gilliam as a director leapt out at me. There’s definitely something familiar about the aesthetic described, blending cheap electronics, hand-adjusted tech, church architecture, dereliction and an overall sense of entropy," writes Connelly in his review. "Have no doubt that this is going to look like a Gilliam film."

We're sent a scoop about Terry Gilliam's next film project and that it's called Zero Theorem, a drama with science fiction overtones to it. Billy Bob Thornton is attached to star in the film as a troubled but brilliant programmer who is on the fast track to discover if the universe was created for a reason -- or if it's just a random fluke with no meaning behind it. The movie is scheduled to start its first day of filming on May 1, 2009. [Full story]
