Finally we have some news to report on Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro's giant monsters meets giant robots movie. Two videos were released on YouTube today in what appears to be the first wave of a viral marketing campaign.

The first video is a fictional test of the "Emergency Kaiju System". Kaiju is the Japanese word for giant monster, so this would be the emergency broadcast alert that would play when a giant monster appeared along the coast of your city:

 

 

The second video is a snippet from a news-like broadcast showing the destruction caused by a kaiju that attacks what appears to be the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge:

Here's a promotional poster that Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. will be handing out to Comic-Con attendees at their panel next week. Also, it was revealed this week within the pages of Entertainment Weekly that the giant robot mecha suits the humans operate are called Jaegers, and the giant monsters that they battle are kaiju.

There's a shake-up currently happening for release dates of tentpole movies coming out in 2013. Thor 2 was pushed back from May to December, opening the door for Legendary Pictures to move up the release of Pacific Rim two months. The new release date for the movie is now May 10, 2013.

Clifton Collins Jr. has now joined the cast. He played Ayel, the right-hand Romulan man to Eric Bana's Nero in 2009's Star Trek. He just finished working on the horror film Hellbenders and is presently working on Taylor Hackford's crime thriller Parker.

The Pacific Rim producers want Idris Elba to star in their little monster movie. After his breakthrough role on The Wire, Elba's star is on the rise. He can be seen playing the Asgardian warrior Heimdall in this summer's Thor and is currently filming Ridley Scott's sci-fi thriller Prometheus.
