Disney has circled a March 14, 2014 release for Maleficent, the studio's live-action tale of the origins of Sleeping Beauty's evil witch. Currently the picture has the date all to itself.

The first contender to be mentioned after the departure Tim Burton is David O. Russell. The filmmaker's free time suddenly increased when he exited development of Uncharted, the movie based on the popular Drake's Fortune video game series. Russell's last movie was the Mark Wahlberg drama The Fighter for which he was nominated for a Best Director Oscar.

Tim Burton has moved off of directing Maleficent for Disney. Reasons weren't given but the buzz around Disney HQ is that David Yates, the director of the past four Harry Potter movies, may be a new candidate to direct the movie.
While Burton may be gone, Angelina Jolie remains attached to play the green villainess.

Disney is hoping to recapture the same box office success it's currently enjoying with its Alice in Wonderland movie by hiring the screenwriter of that film to conjure the script for Maleficent, a live-action spin on the evil sorceress seen in the studio's animated classic Sleeping Beauty. Linda Woolverton is penning the story, said to retell the Sleeping Beauty tale from the point-of-view of the bewitching witch. Tim Burton is said to be interested in possibly making the movie but hasn't committed to it. [Full story]
