DreamWorks Animation has now slated a June 3, 2011 release for the sequel to Kung Fu Panda as well as confirmed the return of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and unspecified "other original cast members" to provide the voices for their characters. In addition to announcing the release date for the sequel the movie studio also revealed that Kung Fu Panda 2 will be produced in stereoscopic 3D and a IMAX-formatted version will be released into those theaters in tandem with the mainstream format release.
Kung Fu Panda 2 will be directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson who served as the head of story on the original film. The producers will be Melissa Cobb, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger; all three also worked on the first Kung Fu Panda in either producing or story capacities.
"We are thrilled to reunite the creative team that made Kung Fu Panda such a global success," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of DreamWorks Animation. "Because of their imaginative work, Po's path to heroism proved popular with moviegoers of all ages around the world."
"The story of Kung Fu Panda provided a great introduction to these characters and afforded wonderful opportunities to further expand on the world we created in ancient China. Quite simply, there's more story to tell," added Bill Damaschke, the Co-President of Production and President of Live Theatrical for DreamWorks.
