Green Lantern shines bright at box office

To no one's surprise Warner Bros. had the top movie at the box office this weekend with Green Lantern, the first movie to be based on that particular superhero. The marketing for this one was done correctly, with different trailers targeting different demographics. Ryan Reynolds has good cross-section appeal amongst men and women, and comic book fans haven't expressed much negativity about him being cast as the character.

But in the last 12 years we've had a lot of comic book movies. Was there enough gas left in the tank for audiences to want to pay and see Green Lantern up on the screen?

Green Lantern nets $3.35 million in midnight showings

Warner Bros. only superhero movie of the year, Green Lantern, took an early bow by generating $3.35 million dollars from early showings Friday morning. But how does that number compare to other alpha male, CG-loaded summer blockbusters that had midnight screenings?

Those lucky souls attending this weekend's WonderCon 2011, Warner Bros. just previewed 4-and-a-half minutes of footage from their upcoming summer superhero flick Green Lantern. For fans of the emerald hero, like myself, who haven't been blown away from the first trailer, the good news is that this new footage delivers the cosmic adventure and weird alienness found in the Green Lantern comic books.

A sneak look at Green Lantern's Parallax

The Daily Blam! website posted a leaked image of the Parallax entity we'll see in the Green Lantern movie. If you're not familiar with the comic book's continuity, Parallax is an evil creature spawned at the start of time. It's yellow and connected to the emotional spectrum of colors that supposedly power all living beings in the DC universe. The Green Lanterns draw their energy from the green part of the emotional spectrum (which represents willpower).

From Casino Royale to Green Lantern?

Director Martin Campbell breathed new life -- twice -- into the James Bond film franchise. In 1995 he directed the first of Pierce Brosnan's Bond films, GoldenEye, and revitalized Bond for a post-Cold War era. In 2007 Campbell returned to the world of 007 again with Casino Royale and, again, rejuvinated the spy by minting Daniel Craig with his license to kill. Now Campbell's next assignment may be to make the Green Lantern movie a reality.
