Uma Thurman has been cast in the lead role for Girl Soldier, an independently financed film scheduled to start filming in the first quarter of next year. The film is based on the non-fiction book Stolen Angels by Kathy Cook which told of how in 1996 a teacher at a Ugandan boarding school sought the safe return of over one hundred of her pupils after they were kidnapped by rebels who wanted to use them as child soldiers. Thurman will play Sister Caroline, the nun whose bravery got most of the children back and who then made it her crusade to bring a stop to these barbaric acts.
Girl Soldier is the first project for Caspian Pictures, a film production company whose goal is to make socially conscious but also commercially viable movies.
"This is a film that had to get made," Thurman said about the project. "It's beyond me that in this day and age the exploitation of child soldiers goes virtually unnoticed and unchecked by Western media." [Full story]
