In an interview with Done Deal done after the release of The Book of Eli, screenwriter Gary Whitta gives us an update on what's happening with The Defenders:

"I've been working pretty closely with Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman and Masi and DJ," states Whitta. "That's really been a great experience. Bob and Alex obviously have incredible instincts, and developing this story with them has been a lot of fun and a great learning experience for me. I can't say too much more about it because it's so early and we’re trying to keep it all very hush-hush until we're ready to show what we've been working on. But I can't say enough good things about working with Kurtzman/Orci, it's been a fantastic experience."

A new movie conceived of by Heroes cast member Masa Oki called The Defenders has been set up at DreamWorks. Oki brought his idea to Transformers and Star Trek scribes Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman who have a producing deal at the studio, the two responded to it and pitched it to DreamWorks who bought it. Now Kurtzman and Orci will be producers on the film while Oki will get an executive producer credit. Screenwriter Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) has been hired to write the script from Oki's pitch and director D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye) is in negotiations to join the party. [Full story]
