Variety reports that Warner Bros. has given a greenlight to the movie and wants it rolling by February of next year. They also may have decided on the movie's leading man, and it could be Tron Legacy's Garrett Hedlund who could be playing the part of Tetsuo (although the name of the character may be changed to make it sound American.)

Orphan and Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra is now talking with his friends at Warner Bros. about directing Akira. According to Variety, the studio has brought down the working budget of the picture from $150 million (when Albert Hughes was developing it) to now around $90 million dollars.

The project is still using the draft written by Albert Torres with polishes by Steve Kloves (the Harry Potter film series) and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man).
