'Game of Thrones' series Greenlighted

Posted by Jack S. Pharaoh on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Holy fuck, yes. I know this means nothing to almost everyone here, but I've been waiting for this since the book series was first optioned three years ago. They even released the first production still, a shot apparently from the prologue of the book. So, yes, people, deal with me starting random threads and forcing irrelevant knowledge upon you. This is how Jack does business, aggresively and in a pompous third-person. Pray I never decide to educate the lot of you about pregnancy.

So because GoT airs Sunday night, and I don't have HBO, I won't be able to get it watched this weekend. This goes against all that I know, but... HURRY UP AND GET THE WEEKEND OVER!!!!!!!

I didn't think you were going to watch the show until 2013 anyway.

He'll start watching the episode on Monday, but he's planning to take his sweet time with it.  He's hoping to finish watching it some time before Martin finishes the series.

I was going to make an exception until you got all mouthy.

I have HBO. I shall be watching this on Sunday night.  Maybe Kah could come over and watch it with me.  Doggy-style.  With whiskey and beer.

You're more likely to Jack to come over than Kah.

That's okay if Jack brings the mead.  I've got plenty of meat.

That ought to be pretty easy.

Only because Peter Jackson didn't direct it.

Well, here we are, 90 minutes to air time, and my cable is out. Mediacom assures me they're working on it. Fuck everything.

Are you still writing your review, Jack?  You ought to send it to Patrick when you're done.

I've never been much for writing reviews (putting me, as far as I can tell, at odds with almost the entirety of the internet community, who've taken the "I'm an amateur reviewer writing in what I deem to be the style of professional reviewers" to ridiculously awful levels).  I dug it.  There wasn't any initial "long-awaited-adaptation shock," (like there was with LOTR back in the day) cause I'd already seen the first fifteen minutes.  The opening credits sequence, which has been exclaimed about by several reviewers and others who had seen the first episode or more (and which had been left out of the first fifteen minute preview), is pretty awesome.  I'd call it beautiful.  It attempts to provide viewers unfamiliar with the books with the geographical layout of the land, possibly making a belabored "pointing-at-map" scene (like we saw in 'The Two Towers') unnecessary.  Maybe we'll see a "pointing-at-map" scene eventually, anyway, since the credits sequence only focuses on a handful of cities and landmarks.

I haven't had many opportunities to watch an adaptation of a work I was so familiar with.  I'd also followed the production with ridiculous fervor, probably only matched by my following of the production of the LOTR movies (after which I decided I'd never do that again).  I knew pretty much every plot point that was coming, and was more intrigued by dialogue and scenes that I didn't recognize from the books.  Watching the actors inhabit the characters was probably what I enjoyed the most.  Nikolaj Coster-Waldau really has just become Jaime Lannister, in my eyes.  Jaime's physicallity was always emphasized in the books, how all eyes were drawn to him, kind of like he was some perfect, golden specimen.  Waldau fills that quota well enough, but then his charisma just seems surprising on top of that.  He acts out Jaime's lazy arrogance in a way that I would call delightful.  I think Lena Headey is also a lot of fun as Cersei (Jaime's twin sister, and country's queen, for those who don't know).  She makes the character sort of haughty, icy, and deliberately unengaged from characters trying to socialize with her, except with Jaime, whom she's clearly more comfortable with.  Dinklage plays slightly younger Lannister Tyrion with zest.  The guy (Harry Lloyd, I think) playing Viserys Targaryen also stands out a bit, because his is another flamboyant character.  He plays Viserys as more tranquil than in the books, where the exiled prince is shrill and frequently enraged (we'll probably get to see more of that as the series goes on, though).  Overall I thought the players and their directors did a good job of making the dialogue and story movements feel natural enough that I wouldn't complain, though I'd make an alteration here or there.  I thought the final scene could've been done a little better, but everybody's a critic (except me).

Most recently, that's happened to me with True Grit and Watchmen.  There was a real sense of the uncanny with both, and I think it made it feel a little harder to "trust" both movies, at first.  "Trust" is the best word I can think of at the moment, but it's not quite the one I want.

I was able to get into True Grit despite this uncanniness, and ended up really liking it.  It was harder for me to get into Watchmen.  To this day, the closest I've come to getting into Watchmen is my deep frustration with what I saw to be squandered potential.

I imagine I will try to download and watch the first Game of Thrones episode before the next weekend.

I watched parts of the first 6 seconds, and thought it was complete shit!

Lots and lots of boobies. Could use more half-naked Jon Snow, rawr!

I could've done with more boobies, and frankly, more of naked Dany.  Time to pause the 1080p version.

Snow and Jaime are very pretty.

The porn version will be called a Game of Bones and will actually just be the same show.

That should definitely be put on the future DVD cover...or perhaps just the second part.

I do wonder which path of cable TV nudity Game of Thrones will go for. Will it be a case of grabbing everyone's attention with copious amounts of nudity in the pilot only to barely have any nudity through the rest of the series? Or will there be notable examples of nudity in almost every episode? And will we get a spin-off series entitled Tyrion's Weekly Whorestravaganza?

Only time will tell.
