Game of Thrones S2: NOT 'A Clash of Kings'
Posted by KingVoyeur on Monday, December 12, 2011
Not only the accents in general as British, but the regional accents of the houses, when applied to the maps of Westoros in both the book and the show (plus HBO guides) seem to broadly match UK distribution.
Also, I find the map of Westoros bears more than a passing resemblance to mainland Britain in certain key areas such as the location of the capital, the Neck, the Wall, Winterfell etc. etc.

Also, I'm glad Dalty remains alive and unspoilt. We need to have more than just Mal for fresh reactions.
I was going to read the books and watch the show and post my reactions, but then I got caught up with working on this Retro Review.
Looks like we all dodged a bullet there.
Anyway, Monday night at 9pm on Sky Atlantic here. They just had a new trailer with plenty of Inception style ''Bwwrram' in it.
When does it start over there?
Sunday.
All of us law abiding citizens won't be able to watch it until Monday anyway.
THat's pretty good.
I don't want to be all spoiler-y, so I'll simply give one of Goiter's favourite reviews: "I liked it."
So I watched it, and it was a'right. Not a whole lot going on, other than a bunch of talking, but that's basically what was going on in the book too. I'm sure Ros was in the brothel scene, but I can't say I recognized her, probably because a red haze always fell over my eyes whenever she showed up in S1. The comet was cool, and I'm glad they kept the opening scene from the book. I probably liked the Stannis scenes the best. A lot of the other dialogue felt like it had been tweaked from the book, apparently to make it less good. Also, apparently everyone in the show has a hint that Arya's missing. Cersei and Tyrion seem more concerned than I remember from the book, but even Catelyn's like "I haven't heard anything about Arya", implying that she's got a feeling something's up with Arya. Because apparently the Lannisters haven't considered just lying and saying they have her.
There's some doofus on the tv.com site that apparently watches everything I watch (I shall refer to him from now on as Doofus), and rates everything as worth shit, so I've made it a habit of giving every one of his reviews a thumbs down. He gave this episode a 6.5, which I probably actually agree with, but I gave his review a thumbs down anyway, just because he's an idiot.
Also, just thought I'd mention the episode title "The North Remembers". While it sounds cool, what exactly does it mean? The North remembers Ned Stark getting his head cut off a couple of days ago? The first season ended with them in the midst of battle because of that. What, you still remember what you're fighting about? Good on you, North!
I also found it amusing when Tyrion first showed up and greeted Tommen and Myrcella, calling them "You" and "You".
Yeah, that's pretty much accurate to the book. I might've wondered while reading the book why the Lannisters didn't just lie and say they had Arya, but I think they were just doing the "neither confirm nor deny" thing, cause they never knew if Arya would turn up at the Stark camp (or maybe already had and that information just hadn't reached them yet) and their lie would be exposed; they could just hope they were able to find her first (if she was even still alive). Word would probably also leak out of King's Landing that Arya had not been seen at court, though that might be good reason for the Lannisters to lie to combat those types of rumors. As for Catelyn, her wondering why there's no mention of Arya is from the book, too, andQuasar wrote:

VERY MILD SPOILER!
a little later on in the book she becomes convinced that Arya is dead.
NO MORE SPOILER.
So have we figured out what the second season of Game of Thrones will be called yet?
I think it's called 'A Clutch of Chickens'. The ratings for the GoT S2 premiere reported the expected bump (3.85 million for the first showing, 6.2 for all three, up from 3 million for the first showing of S1's finale). I was hoping for a little bit more, as usual, but it's in line with what other shows like 'True Blood' have done ('True Blood' premiered to 3.7 million for its second season, but rose all the way to 5.1 mil for the season finale; that would be tough to match). I keep refreshing Google searches and the WiC website to see when the news about season 3 being greenlighted is announced (HBO has a habit of announcing renewals on the Tuesday after a premiere). I remember I had planned on starting the third GoT thread when that happened, before King Voyeur bogarted it.
ETA: A lot of people are expecting a 2-season pickup, I guess because of the stated plans of splitting the third book over two seasons (and also the many rumors of a 2-season pickup, I suppose). We ought find out soon.
If they changed the Others to vampires, that'd increase viewership.
Arya appears to have undergone a Hermione type growing up in a small amount of time.
I have just realised that sounded far , far more inappropriate than I meant....

Winter is Coming, Bitches!!
It's closer than ever now, since it is officially autumn in the show. Anyway, some things I forgot to mention earlier: 'The Killing' premiere's ratings were down 30% from the end of its first season. Hahahahahahaha. Some countries like Poland put up Got episode 202 this week for online streaming, and there were claims they would be doing this "week early" thing all year, causing much consternation by interwebs nerds in America who would suddenly be a week behind everybody else. HBO has now declared that this was done in error and the episode has been taken down, but it's out there in pirateland now and it may have found its way onto a little magic box I own. While that is very cool, the bad news today is that HBO has not announced their intentions to proceed with GoT season 3 (or 4) despite everybody expecting them to. I don't know what to take away from this except that maybe they are not quite as enthusiastic about the show as I thought they were (or maybe they're just stopping with the Tuesday-after-the-premiere renewals; I can't think why, except that 'Luck' ended up being cancelled one and a half episodes into its season two production, and while that was supposedly mostly due to the deaths of horses used in the show, the ratings, while poor to begin with, went down as the season went on, AFAIK. Maybe HBO is deciding to wait a little longer for renewals, but the problem with that is that GoT requires so much prep work each season with new castings and locations that they can't wait too long). There seems to be absolutely no way a season three greenlight isn't happening, but S2 had a reported 15% increase in budget from S1, and maybe reining that in is something they want to talk about before moving forward. That's presumptuous on my part, especially with all the good news as far as DVD/BR sales and the S2 premiere ratings, but I can't help but speculate.
I'm hoping for a Ros spin-off.
