Dawn, Day & Diary of the Dead

Posted by RedKarma on Sunday, July 26, 2009

or "How RK Spent Her Weekend." Zombies, zombies & more zombies. As usual, I will keep the reviews relatively spoiler free.

Rented the remakes of "Dawn of the Dead" & "Day of the Dead". The original is always tough to beat in my book, so I try not to judge remakes by the standards of the original.

I really liked "Dawn of the Dead". Good characters, excellent zombies, and a decent story. Fairly star studded as these things go, and it's always fun to spot Tom Savini (can you find him? Hint: he's not a zombie). They spent some bucks on this one and it shows. Very good, seven thumbs up.

"Day of the Dead" was a little disappointing. In all fairness I have to say it has never been one of my favorite zombie scenarios to begin with. There is a great hospital sequence, the scariest part of the movie in my opinion. It comes pretty early on, making the next scariest thing about this movie is the speed with which victims can get infected and turn. There is a nice echo of the "Ben" character from the original, but overall I didn't really care if the characters made it or not.

"Diary of the Dead" was awful. You know it's not good when you're rooting for the zombies to eat just about every character they introduce you to. The movie did demonstrate how you may be surprised by just who will help you on Zombie Day and who will hurt you, I just wanted all these people dead ASAP.

Feel free to post your own comments on these movies, or any other zombie flick out there that you liked.

These are great, Dawn is a fucking classic and for some reason the music that was done by The Goblins (???) should have annoyed the living fuck out of me but instead added such a great atmosphere to the movie, especialy with the Mall.

The more times I watch Day the more I enjoy it. I was a little dissapointed at first but after awhile it grew on me like herpes...wait... Dr. Frankenstein rules!

Land of the Dead gets a lot of shit and honestly, I can kind of see why. It seems Romero keeps on telling the same damn story and offers nothing new to the mix but I rather enjoyed this film, even with some flaws.

Diary of the Dead, like you just said Karma, was fuckin' clown shoes! I forced myself to watch this garbabge and it really dissapointed me that Romero thought he was going back to his roots with this movie...crazy... That and who the fuck blow drys their hair while a horde of zombies are all over the fuckin' place!!

I keep my standards low, that way im never dissapointed

I liked "Land of the Dead", but I like John Leguizamo, so that figures. The Gas Station Zombie was pretty creepy, sort of another take on the "Ben" character from "Day". But I think the best thing I liked about that one is seeing the priviledged get theirs. And spotting Tom Savini as a zombie. ;)

Damn GD, good point about the Goblins. I still love that movie, it's in my all time top 5. I watch it every Halloween and about 10 other times a year too. But not when half the light bulbs burn out in the basement and I'm home alone doing laundry. Seriously!! That opening with the apartment building always freaks me out, always.
