Caprica

Posted by Jakester on Sunday, April 19, 2009

I suppose this should be in the DVD forum, but as it's a pilot, I thought I'd put it here.

I saw the DVD version yesterday, and aside from the many boobie shots (there are quite a few), I'm not sure what they'll cut to fit on TV.

A spoiler-free review is that I did like it. It would be helped by tweaking the pacing a little bit, but it was still pretty solid. I'm keen to see what happens next, so I think the pilot did its job.

I'm holding off until it's all available on a season one DVD set. And since there will be a long wait, I won't be able to see the show until it is out on DVD in all likelyhood.

I plan on buying it when I'm done as a Drill Sergeant.

watched this tonight.. whoah... the creation of the very first C.Y.L.O.N. awesome... it was freaky how much the ending paralelled that of Frankenstein

(CAPRICA spoilers below)
I was kinda half-laughing when Greystone uploaded his daughter's Avatar and "being" into the cylon battle trooper (which will be developed for the military) but then everything went to complete shit and the upload fizzled... kinda surprizing that she was still in there someplace...funny that this is exactly what Cavel wanted in Battlestar Galactica.. to be inside a tin suit and ditch the skin and "evolve".

overal, I liked it. I didnt know William Adama was 68 in the BSG series though, here, he's 11 years old.

I also watched Caprica this weekend, and I liked it enough, but I didn't find it very compelling. My interest came out of seeing it as BSG backstory rather than the specific story it was trying to tell. It wasn't a bad pilot by any means, just not as good as I was hoping for.

for me it was all about a return to the good old days when Cylons actually LOOKED like Cylons (the classic Cylons from 1979) i watched it with a non-fan of the current Ron Moore BSG series, but she was a big fan of the original show... when the Cylon shows up in the paintball scenes (and later in the military tests) we both smiled a big sigh of releif... the old Cylons are back.

I did notice Glen A. Larson gets an executive producer credit on Caprica, which shows Ron moore and Larson have rebuilt that burned bridge or something they had going on for a while.

X-files William B. Davis gets a grand total of two short scenes and then pfft... well I've said too much...se now if they put his avatar inside a Cylon body then things will literally go to complete shit in a handbasket.

No. Larson gets a producing credit because of some legal mumbo jumbo.
Frankly, I don't think RDM cares one way or the other. Larson, might have stronger opinions, however.

Oh is that what happened? interesting.

I thought it was also cool on the DVD is an entire episode of Ghost Hunters Hometown Haunts (which is one of the better shows) too cool.

now all i have to buy is Duckman season 3-4 and i'll be happy

I think the cross promotion of Ghost Hunters sucks. They could have used it for better extras, a DTS track, or just less data compression.

At least they didn't include any 'rasslin' this time around.

They haven't. I'm just glad that they didn't.
Oh, from what I gather, there is a wrestling forum on the Sci-Fi boards, but you're not allowed to bring up the fact that wrestling has NOTHING to do with Sci-Fi. Is Ghost Hunters Sci-Fi, for that matter? I'd think the only fiction in the show is the belief that they'll every find any ghosts.

Ghost Hunters fits better than wrestling does. plus even if you're a skeptic, its still grounded in Science (the tools of the Ghost hunting trade are mostly used by Electricians and other "respected" careers) and if you're a skeptic, it is fiction- so that works.

Oh, I don't have a problem with ghost hunting. I think it's kind of cool. I just don't want to watch a show about it.

ah... I see. of the three shows on air currently Paranormal State ranks #1 over Ghost Hunters (and GHI) while Travel Channel's The Haunting host Yevette Fielding makes me want to drop a piano on her head... two of the unwritten rules of filming a ghost hunt: 1) never get a screamer as your host, and Yvette Fielding is a total screamer. 2) never over-populate a room with a bunch of chatty ladies and screamers and then be dissapointed when all your audio is destroyed by people talking and scuffling around and screaming.

What's the ghost hunter show (I think on Travel) with the buff but annoying frat guy host who's always waaay too dramatic?

Oh, and I'm still on the fence about Caprica. Can't we just leave some things to the imagination instead of filling in every little plot hole?

No, we cant. and its 1,000,000,000,000% better (in every way) than the ill conceived ORIGIANL spinoff Galactica 1980 so i suppose we should be thankful and counting our blessings that Moore knows what he's doing.

But...Galactica: 1980 gave us Cylons that look like humans!

Uh...in Galactica: 1980 -- cylons had figured out how to look human.

damn... I'd forgotten all about that, probably because the series had became so dirt cheap, back then making the cylons human was seen as another way to cut costs and bring the production back down to earth.... err, so to speak.

back in 1980, did anyone every stop to explain Cylons being human or was it quickly and quietly written off without explanation like all the other massive changes to the show?

I do remember an episode where Robot cylons showing up on Earth one halloween night at a costume party with Wolfman Jack and battled Barry van Dyke and whats'his'name (the dad from Farscape)

Oh, I don't remember that, but I only remember bits and pieces of Galactica: 1980. I sure as crap am not going to buy the DVDs to re-watch it again.
