Being Human

Posted by mckracken on Thursday, August 20, 2009

the Beeb has done a werewolf/vampire/ghost show that deals with the every day lives of people dealing with their afflictions. So far i've watched the first 3 shows, on the BBC... very interesting, very good...

thoughts?

I really enjoyed it. There are certainly any number of shows that explore what it means to be human from the perspective of someone who's not (TNG did it with Data, for example; or Buffy and Angel), so it's not an especially original concept, but it's a hell of a lot of fun, and I really enjoy the characters. There's a good bit of swearing and nudity (George's butt, mostly), so I expect that BBCA has edited some of it not only for content, but IIRC, the episodes ran close to an hour in and of themselves, so I epxect some bits have been cut for time. If they run the "Director's Cuts" on On Demand, it's worthwhile to check 'em out.

Incidentally, there was a pilot for the show that had an almost entirely different cast. The only one who made it through to series was Russell Tovey (George), and I think he's the heart of the show, so I was pleased that he stayed.

its probably a good thing that my last post never went live because I totally thought George was the vampire... George is the werewolf right?
The Beeb does show the Directors Cut of this, but they still blur out the butt shots and cut the F-bombs, the word Shit still gets through though.

I thought that it was odd they wouldnt say "Pedophile". Do people in britian really say "Pedo" instead of Pedophile and spell it Peedo? LOL!

I did like the line "what you got hidden in your Red Dwarf box set? You got scat hidden in your Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang DVD??"

Shit like that is why I tend not to watch BeebA. They claim it's "the law" that won't let them air the episodes, but that's just bullshit.

Yes, the Brits pronounce it "Peedo," btw.

actually jakester, Episode #5 was pretty hardcore and dropped about 3 F-bombs and 4 "shits" but perhaps the censor wasnt quick enough? LOL!

The overall graphic violence is no harder than a typical Angel or Buffy episode though, still looked nice when the chick staked that one vampire through the heart, the ghost gets her doorway because Owen "LeDouche" confesses to the police (I emagine he's get locked into a mental asylum and not go to jail for talking about Ghosts, Vampires and werewolves as if they existed) but as sad as this is, I can honestly see the vampire clan converting Owen for their own plans. This would majorly suck for George (and well Mitchell got the stake in Episode #5) but yes I can easily see him coming back as a vampire.

sad, I just checked IMDB and they show that both the actors who play Annie (ghost) and Michell (Vampire) are only listed for 6 out of the 7 episodes and the George was the only actor that filmed all seven episodes. and since I've watched all of them up to #5, Annie see's her "door" and Michell was staked throug the heart and dying, I can easy see both of these characters leaving George to deal with his lycanthrope-ness all by himself.

I hope he goes all werewolfy on the vampire clan in Episode 6 and 7...

has this show been renewed for season #2 yet?

The "7th" episode would be the pilot. There were six episodes in the first "season." It's certainly set up for a second season, but I'm not positive if it got one or not. I think it was greenlit, but am not positive. In any event, S2 hasn't been on the air yet.

I read in the comments section for Being Human at IMDB that they have started filming a second season which is GREAT NEWS!!

so the 7th episode is actually the Pilot? I watched the first episode of this series on Demand and I was surprised that it wasnt much of a "start" of anything, Michell and George and Annie were already living together under one roof, Annie had already been killed without any explanation, no reason was given that both of them could see her, George and Michell worked as orderlies at the hospital, Michell was a vampire who could exist in the sun for no reason, although I hear that in the pilot he was running with a sheet over him in broad daylight..

so if i'm understanding this right, the Seventh "Pilot" episode features George, Michell and Annie but Michell and Annie are played by different actors?

I think it would make sense for them to completely refilm the pilot, using George's scenes and replacing all of Michell and Annie's scenes with the regular season #1 actors.
